Judge Sully Speaks at Wellness Dinner

On May 28, 2009 at 6pm the Wanbli Wiconi Tipi hosted a Wellness Dinner to
appreciate Staff and Volunteers.  The Wanbli Wiconi Tipi celebrates 4
years of operations in working with our community and our youth for a
better future as of May 23, 2009.  Many activities and events highlighted
Wellness Week for staff and youth such as:  Scavenger Hunt, Mr. X (Hand
Shake),Field Trip to Wounded Knee,Youth Field Day, Basketball games, and
a Potluck Salad Contest.  The Wellness Dinner was a great opportunity to
appreciate all the many people that contribute to the success of our
organization.  The Facility Administrator, Miskoo Petite Sr, explained
the many achievements that the program has successfully accomplished in
the last year.  These include:  moving the Children's Court into the
Facility for more efficiency and effectiveness: changing the annual
funding agreement to include the Adult Facility as a part of our
program; and scoring a 94 out of 100 in a program review conducted every
3 years by the BIA Professional Standards Division.  Children's Court
Judge, Janel Sully, spoke to the crowd about the many examples of the
positive change that is seen with the youth we work with.  She also
spoke about her experience on the Planning Committee, which started in
the year 2000.  There was recognition of planning committee members and
tribal leadership who shaped the program to be in the position of
success that we are in today.  Judge Sully thanked all the Detention
Staff for the "love and compassion" that is evident in the work that they
do. She explained that "this is a very rewarding place to work, and I am
very happy to come here every day."  All volunteers and staff received
certificates of appreciation from the program and an Honor song was sung
by the Medicine Buffalo Singers.  The Shift Sergeants, who represent
some of the most professional and experienced people in our
organization, were introduced to the crowd of nearly 100 people.  Our
Shift Sergeants make many sound decisions, although they are often short
on staffing.  Their expertise manages to keep the facility safe, secure,
clean and healthy, 24 hours a day.  Shift Sgt.Catherine Tiger thanked
everyone for coming, and Shift Sgt. Darrin Running Horse explained that
the Corrections staff work nights, weekends, and holidays and are often
behind the scenes.  He was happy to be appreciated and also wanted to
appreciate all his co-workers, who are very deserving.  All children who
attended the event received "Beanie Babies" as a gift from the program.
